II. The Three Heavens
Because of the presence of the word heavens, there must be more than one. The Apostle Paul affirmed this in 2 Corinthians 12:2 “I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.” Let us now begin our study of these three heavens.
In Genesis 1:8 – “And God called the firmament Heaven…” the word firmament means “expanse of sky.” The first heaven, then, is what we call the atmosphere where we see blue skies, clouds, airplanes, and birds. This is where the air is. Twenty-one times the Bible speaks of the birds or fowls of the “air.” One example is Matthew 8:20, “And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”
Birds and fowl are also said to occupy “heaven” 21 times. For example: Psalms 104:12 “By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.” So, then, the air and heaven are one and the same: The First Heaven.
This is where dew comes from. “Dew of Heaven” is mentioned 9 times. One example is Genesis 27:28 “Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:”
This is also where rain comes from – Acts 14:17 “Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”
In conclusion, the First Heaven is where the birds, clouds, airplanes, etc. are; the Earth’s atmosphere.
The phrase “stars of heaven” occurs 11 times in Scripture.
Back in the first chapter of the Bible, we also see the Second Heaven made – Genesis 1:14-17 “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,” This is speaking of our sun and our moon.
I could quote many other verses as well, but here a just a few:
Isaiah 13:10, “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.”
Psalms 8:3-4 “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” This one really blesses me.
Let us give glory to God for these first 2 heavens, and like David, “consider” them.
1 Chronicles 16:26 “For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.”
Psalms 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
