What does God’s Word say about being Holy? First let us look at how God is Holy. 1 John 1:5 “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” There is no sin in God at all. He is totally separate from anything evil. For us to have fellowship with Him, we must strive to be Holy. When we live in sin, we break fellowship with Him. Understand that we cannot be perfect as He is until we go to be with Him. But we must, with all our hearts, live each day trying to live separate from sin so that we may have fellowship with God. My devotion this morning touched on daily cleansing ourselves of sin so that we may have fellowship with God. The cleansing comes from examining myself each day and confessing and repenting of my sins, as well as asking God to show me of any un-confessed sin that I need to bring before Him. Since I am born with a sinful, fleshly nature, I am bound to commit some sin every day of my life. So, I need a daily cleansing. This is part of trying to be holy unto God.
1 Peter 1:16 “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” Quotes Leviticus 19:2 “Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.” We see that because God is holy, He calls us to be holy. If we are living under the influence of this world, we are apart from God and cannot be holy. The only way we can live holy unto God is by the power of His Holy Spirit. Therefore, we must first be saved by the blood of Jesus and filled with His Spirit to be able to even try to live a holy life. God reveals any un-confessed sin in our lives through His Holy Spirit. If we try to just “be good people” we are doing things on our own. Being good does not get us to Heaven. John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Once we are saved, then the Holy Spirit’s power aids us in living holy or righteously for God. 1 Peter 1:14-16 “As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; (not just in our speech, but in how we live our lives) Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” We can be holy by being obedient to God in ALL areas of our lives. To be able to obey God, we must KNOW God – Psalm 119:9-12 “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.” To know God’s Word, is to know God.
If we are truly spending time with our Lord each day and in His Word and hiding it in our hearts, it will show outwardly and some in this world will see and possibly come to know Him too. Our speech will change, our faces will probably smile more because our hearts are smiling more. Our dress when we come into His house will change as well. When we first start walking with the Lord, we may not understand that how we dress in His house and in His Service reflects where we are in our walk with Him. It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict a child of God of things in our outward appearance as to where we are in our holiness. If we are dressing like we are going to a back yard B-B-Q instead of wearing our best to His house, we still need work in our hearts. Only the Holy Spirit can do that. That is why we pray for each other in these areas. As we grow closer to Him, we understand that, and are happy to show Him respect by giving Him our best when we come to His house, or when we serve Him. That comes with time. I have always pondered how some can have no problem whatsoever dressing nice and respectful for a friend’s wedding, for example, but coming to the house of our Holy God Jehovah in disrespect and immodesty. But, that is something I leave to the Lord. It is my responsibility to act according to God’s direction and set an holy example for Him. I have to remind myself that children are not being taught, as I was, that when we come into God’s house, we show Him respect, by dressing in our best.
1 The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.
2 The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.
3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.
4 The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.
5 Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.
7 He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.
8 Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.
9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
