Seek and Follow a Real Man of God

“Elisha’s Encounter with Children” (4)

“…and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.” II Kings 4:20b

In this experience, Elisha had some earlier communication with this family. The great woman of Shunem had recognized he was a man of God and the Lord used him to pray that she have a son. It came true and then tragedy of tragedies, the lad dies. Thus, we have a parent who realizes her child is already lost, gone, dead.

One great lesson in this story is this family’s interest in and care for the man of God, Elisha. Over thirty-five times in these few chapters is the moniker used, “man of God.” You may know men of influence or a man of means, but, how valuable is an association with a real man of God! Elisha brought hope and light into this childless family and then when the light was extinguished and hope forsaken, he was there for the family. This was a man of God who believed God worked miracles. He was touched by human needs and had a visible holiness (vs. 9). He was not just a man’s man, but God’s man!

As a parent, if you have arrived at a brick wall of a belligerent, back-slidden boy or girl, get yourself and them to a man of God. Elisha stretched himself over this child three times and brought him back to life (vss. 33-35). A good place to start would be to get faithful to church Sunday morning, Sunday night and the mid-week service. I’m not talking about just a “run-of-the-mill” minister. I’m saying get them to a man that God knows and he knows God. — Dr. Tim Green

I cannot stress enough the importance of finding and being faithful to God through a KJV Bible teaching preaching church and true man of God. They are getting fewer by the day, but they are still out there. Attending the new-fangled ear-tickling churches who put on the same show or a “contemporary version” on a Sunday morning or Saturday night is not a true Bible teaching church. These “feel good” churches who use the corrupt versions of God’s Word teach corrupt doctrine that helps sinners stay comfortable in their sin. If you visit a church and the Man of God preaches/teaches straight from God’s incorrupt KJV Bible, you will definitely be convicted in your Spirit. Stay there! Those men of God have no problem saying it like it is and counseling from God’s Word, instead of joining us in making excuses for our children’s behaviour. If you are attending a church once a week or less just for a feel good fix, you are not receiving true Godly teaching, run from it! So-called pastors of those churches will be held accountable by God, and so will we if we support them.

Stay Close to the Lord at All Times

“Elisha’s Encounters with Children” (3)

“Now there cried a certain woman…unto Elisha, …Thy servant my husband is dead; …and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.” II Kings 4:1

In this intriguing story, Elisha crosses paths with a widow and her two sons. She represents a parent who realizes she is about to lose her children. She wisely admits she has a problem that is too big for her to resolve and goes to the man of God. After admitting the seriousness of the situation, she is willing to make the adjustments necessary that were advised her by Elisha. The prophet inquired initially what she had (vs. 2). There was a shortage of what was needed and she was instructed to get some help (vs. 3). In her case, it was a scarcity of vessels. She borrowed all she could and her two boys watched God fill the vessels with oil. She was told to sell the accumulated product, pay her debt and enjoy the bounty with the boys! (vss. 5-7).

We live in a sad day of single parenthood. Some are like the widow here, but multiplied thousands are from the devastation of divorce. As a parent, it would behoove you to realize the situation you are in and endeavor to rectify it by engaging your children in the task to keep the “wolf from the door” and the family intact.

The modern home resides in a time of famine–a famine of mammoth proportions; perhaps not a shortage of food, but of faith. Folk, this poor woman and mother was able to provide for her family through character, hard work and adherence to Bible principles. Surely she was a widow with Proverbs 31 attributes and you can be one too by the grace of God. –Dr. Tim Green

The best and most important decision we can make as parents, if we must go through divorce, is to “stick like glue” to our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Word daily, attending a good Bible believing, preaching church, and calling on our brothers and sisters in Christ for support through the turmoil. Having gone through the monster of divorce, I would not wish it on my worst enemy, especially if children are involved. When we let the devil deceive us about our self worth and leave the Lord and His teaching support and our church family, we most assuredly may be dragged back into the world and its evils. I see this happening to children today, and it breaks my heart. We must stay close to God and set the Godly example our children need to see, as God works in our lives to bring us through our trials. They will be more likely to follow our example and stay close to Him as well. If we do not, they are more likely to be satan’s bondmen!

Destroy the Family, Destroy a Society

I will share devotions over the next several days about how the destruction of the family unit, therefore our children, gives our land over to satan. We let the few squeaky wheels win when they took prayer out of our schools, and many more of our Godly values are going down today because we hide our heads under the covers and go on about our lives as if it is of no consequence. We remain complacent while forsaking the teaching of God’s truth and bringing our children up in the admonition of the Lord; they are left to their own devices, killing each other in our streets,  while parents strive to earn the almighty dollar to pay for their material stuff, or stay stooped in their addictive lifestyles. “Cause and effect of taking God out of everything.”

“Elisha’s Encounters with Children”

“…and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him,…” II Kings 2:23b

The mantle of Elijah has just been solemnly placed on the shoulders of Elisha, who had used it to part the waters of the Jordan, and with a cruse of salt he had healed the waters of Jericho. Now, heading toward Bethel, the man of God is met by some wild, undisciplined children. This incident is the first of five encounters Elisha had with children in the early days of his ministry.

The wild, undisciplined children are well evidenced in our neighborhoods, at the grocery store, the restaurant and sad to say, in many of our churches today. These unrestrained rebels have been raised by unprincipled parents or are the suffering of offspring of broken homes and absentee parents. They are educated in the “war zones” of our public schools, where discipline is down-graded and despised. I pity most state school teachers and believe they earn every penny of their salaries for the most part, and especially if they even try to teach! Regrettably, many church schools are not much better.

The children in Elisha’s day (42 of them) had no respect, no reverence, and no restraint. They mocked the man of god and two momma bears came out of the forest and resolved the issue. In our day, the tattooed and body-pierced problem kids are being devoured by the devil, demons, debauchery, delinquency and disgrace at an early age. This destruction is unprecedented in the history of mankind. They are the end result of a nation and a people who have rejected God, His Word and His righteousness! –Dr. Tim Green

Please, let us join Christ in the battle for our families and our children!
