“I Will Answer”

Psalm 91:14-16 “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” (Part II of D.L. Moody’s Sermon “The Ninety-First Psalm”)

II. “I Will Answer” “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him.” There is a chance for all of us to call. The great God that made Heaven and earth has promised, “I will answer him.” If you call on God for deliverance and for victory over sin and every evil, God is not going to turn a deaf ear to your call. I do not care how black your life has been, I do not care what your past record has been, I do not care how disobedient you have been, I do not care how you have back-slidden and wandered; if you really want to come back, God accepts the willing mind, God will hear your prayer, and He will answer.

Listen to the prodigal: “Father, I have sinned!” That was enough; the father took him right to his bosom. The past was blotted out at once. Look at the men on the day of Pentecost. Their hands were dripping with the blood of the Son of God; they had murdered JESUS CHRIST. And what did Peter say to them, “It shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Look at the penitent thief. It might have been that when a little boy, his mother taught him that same passage in Joel, “It shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” As he hung there on the Cross, it flashed into his mind that this was the Lord of glory, and though he was on the very borders of hell, he cried out, “Lord, remember me,” and the answer came right then and there, “To day thou shalt be with me in paradise.” In the morning associated with thieves; in the evening, associated with the purest of Heaven. In the morning, cursing – Matthew and Mark both tell us that those two thieves came out cursing; in the evening, uplifted on high, an inhabitant of Heaven. In the morning, as black as hell could make him; in the evening, not a spot or wrinkle. Why? Because he took God at His word.

My dear friend, if you are unsaved, you just call upon God now, and here is a promise, “I will answer him.”

A few years ago an old returned missionary went to one of our leading hospitals to have a surgical operation performed. He was to go under ether, and it was doubtful whether he would come out or not; he might wake up in another world. He bade adieu to his friends, gave them his farewell blessing – he was a very Godly man – and when the doctor said, “Well, we are ready,” he faced them, and with a calm look, he said: “Would you just wait a minute?” Then he lifted his voice in prayer, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” Then, opening his eyes, he said, “Doctor, I am ready,” and passed under the knife, and out from under it into health.

My dear friends, it is a sweet privilege to pray; it is a sweet privilege to be in touch with Heaven, to be in communion with the great God that made Heaven and earth. “I will answer him.” I suppose there is not a Christian in this audience but can say Amen to that. You can say God has answered in the past, and you believe He will do so again. Some people say they cannot call. Perhaps you cannot make an eloquent prayer – I hope that you cannot – I have heard about all the eloquent prayers I want to. But you can say, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner…” Only be sincere, and God will hear your cry. Mark you, there is a sham cry. Mothers understand that; they know when their children cry in earnest, or whether it is a sham cry. Let the child give a real cry of distress, and the mother will leave everything and fly to her child. I have been forty years in Christian work, and I have never known God to disappoint any man or woman who was in earnest about their soul’s salvation. I know lots of people who pretend to be in earnest, but their prayers are never answered.

Restoration of the New Heaven and New Earth

Between Heaven & Earth

A. New Heaven

1. Prophesied: Isaiah 65:17 “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” See also Isaiah 66:22. Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” See also Matthew 5:18; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33; Hebrews 12:25-29.

2. Fulfilled: 2 Peter 3:10, 13 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up… Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” See also Revelation 21:1.

3. Destruction of Present Heavens – Dissolved with fire and rolled back like a scroll – Isaiah 34:4; 2 Peter 3:12 – “And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.” “Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” Revelation 6:14 “And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.”

4. Creation of New Heaven (Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22) A direct creative act of God.

B. New Earth

1. Prophesied (Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22; Matthew 5:18; Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33; Hebrews 12:25-29; Revelation 21:5)

2. Fulfilled – 2 Peter 3:7-14 “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. (Also Revelation 21:1)

3. Destruction of Present Earth

a. Destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:7)

b. Destroyed by fervent heat (2 Peter 3:10, 12)

4. Creation of New Earth – Isaiah 65:17; 66:22 “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” “For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.” Again, a direct creative act of God.

The Final Generation

The Holy Bible - 1611 King James Version

Some years ago, a preacher where I used to go to church did an eschatological study on the “Doctrine of End Times.” I have gone through other end-time studies over the years, but I find this to be the most Biblical study I have ever received. This is the first of several posts I will share on this theme. It is extremely important that we know the truth based on God’s true word. Look and see if these words do not describe our present times. If there are any who would say they do not understand these words, I suggest you pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s truths and give you understanding, some may need to make sure they are truly saved by the blood of Jesus. These are all the signs we need to know. If God had let us know the hour of Jesus’ return, man would put off calling on Him for Salvation and growing to know Him more. We are to live each day as if it is the day Jesus calls His Church to meet Him in the air. How our lives would be so very different if we did!

I. The Final Generation

A. The Last Generation Prophesied

“There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their fithiness. There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.” (Proverbs 30:11-14)

“Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise, ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” (Matthew 24:32-35) See also Mark 13:28-31; Luke 21:29-33.

B. The Last Generation Church Described

“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” (Revelation 3:14-22)

C. The Last Generation Exposed

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith… But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” (2 Timothy 3:1-8, 13)

In Elaboration:

Verse 1 – “This know also that in the last days perilous times shall come.” I think we can all agree that these are perilous times. Wars, AIDS, drugs, violence, crime, suicide, terrorists, disasters (in divers places-in many places at the same time); the list goes on.

Verse 2 – “”For men shall be lovers of their own selves.” – The god of self: me, myself and I. This is also known as the religion of humanism; whatever feels good. “Covetous” – Those who desperately try to keep up with the Joneses, loving the world and the things of this world. “Boasters” – Those who cannot say enough about themselves. “Proud” – People who take personal credit for what God enables them to do. “Blasphemers” – Have you heard the name of God or Jesus Christ used in vain lately? Profanity is everywhere. Anything injurious to sacred things is blasphemy. Choosing to live in sin is also blasphemy. “Disobedient to parents” – Children in rebellion to their parents’ authority. Too many parents forget that they are the parents and let their children have authority over them; they want to be their ‘friends’. “Unthankful” – When was the last time you saw someone give thanks before a meal? Have you ever said, “Lord, thank you for my country, my job, my health, my family, my life, my church…?” “Unholy” – People who are sinful and practice unrighteousness.

Verse 3 – “Without natural affection” – Today we are more concerned about saving whales than we are about saving little babies. The abortion statistics are staggering. Some show more affection towards dogs and cats today than towards wives, husbands, children, neighbors, or friends. And also consider how rampant is the abomination of homosexuality, and they flaunt it and are actually proud of their sin. If God’s children try and tell them truth, we are called haters. They actually are haters of the truth. “Truce Breakers” – Breaking promises. Peace treaties have become an exercise in futility. Until human nature changes, man’s heart will remain prejudiced and filled with hatred. “False Accusers” – Those who pin the blame on everyone else instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. Have you noticed how much slander and lies are propagated in today’s society? Notice how many people speak before investigating? “Incontinent” This means a lack of self-restraint or chastity; seeking instant gratification for every lust of the flesh or eyes. “Fierce” – Violence in sports, movies, TV, between countries, factions, sects, etc. “Despisers of those that are good” – Any president our country has does not stand a chance against the vicious pens of those who hate capitalism. Godly men and women are condemned today as evildoers living on the lunatic fringe.

Verse 4 – “Traitors” – Look at all the Socialists, Leftists, and Liberals already in our government, selling America out. “Heady” – This means to make a decision rashly; being headstrong. “High minded” – Thinking yourself to be better than you are or thinking higher of yourself than you ought to. “Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God” – Sundays have become a day of recreation, rather than a day of church attendance and service hallowed to our gracious God. How this must sadden Him.

Verse 5 – “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” – Do you know of anyone who goes to church for an hour each week, then lives like the devil for the other 167 hours? Many say they believe in God, but they deny that He has the power to change their lives. Up to 80% of the ministers in our pulpits today do not believe the miracles in the Bible are authentic. This also brings to mind those who call themselves ministers of God’s word, but teach lies to the layman. Such lies as, it is okay if you are homosexual, God still loves you. Yes, God does love you, but He hates your sin, and He does not teach that those of us who agree with what His Word says must accept or tolerate your sin. Do we accept those who commit murder after murder like Jack the Ripper. Murder is a sin as well as Sodomy (what the Bible calls homosexuals). Ministers are held to a higher standard and will have to stand before our just God one day and give account as to their deceiving the flock in these matters.

Verse 6 – “Silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts” – You see them on TV, billboards, movies, in music, magazines, etc. Senseless slaves to lust, incapable of controlling themselves or saving themselves for their husbands, exhibiting no self-respect. Those who choose to stay pure and virgin and keep themselves for marriage are very few today.

Verse 7 – “Ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” – The monumental volumes of knowledge that have been accumulated have not helped man find God, nor the solutions to this earth’s problems. Yet we are always learning more and more, just for the sake of learning.

Verse 8 – “Resist the truth” – Jesus claimed to be the truth (John 14:6). God has said that His Word is the truth. When the true Word of God is preached today, there is a resistance to our yielding to that truth. “Men of corrupt minds” –  The imagination of men’s hearts is only evil continually. Who would have ever thought the Constitution would be used to protect pornographers and throw the Bible out of the schools? “Reprobate concerning the faith” – A reprobate is a scoundrel. Certainly, religion has been rocked by scoundrels who appeared for a while as Christian ministers.

Verse 13 – “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived” – This answers the question, “Do you think things will ever get any better?” The Bible clearly says NO! Humanism says man will save himself. God says man is in the process of destroying himself because of his sinful nature.

These signs of the times we have looked at here indicate that God is right. These are, indeed, the Last Days! What should we do? We must get ready to meet our Lord! Jesus said, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh…”
