The Doctrine of Heaven – Part 14

The New Jerusalem

One of the 7 angels that had poured out a vial of God’s wrath on the old earth now shows John the Bride and the New Jerusalem. The Bride – Rev. 21:9 – “And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” is defined as “the nations of them which are saved” in Rev. 21:24 –  “And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.”

The angel carries John away to a vantage point on a great and high mountain to watch the descension of the New Jerusalem from the New Heaven down to the new earth. It is a great and holy city – Rev. 21:10 “And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,” The city has the glory of God – Rev. 21:11 “Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;” That statement alone is impossible for us to fathom. The city’s lighting is described as a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Pliny speaks of white jasper called Astrios, which he says is “crystallo propinquans” – “near to crystal.” This stone can be found in India.

Later we read that the city has no need of a sun or moon for the glory of God lightens it and the Lamb, Jesus Christ, is the light there. Both spiritually and literally, God is light – 1 John 1:5 “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

The wall of the city is described in Rev. 21:12, 13, 17, 18a – “And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:”, “On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.”, “And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.”, “And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.” Do not confuse the wall around the city with the wall of the city (about 1500 miles high!). The wall around the city is great and high, 144 cubits. A cubit is approximately 18 inches: the distance from an average man’s elbow to the tip of his middle finger. This wall is possibly between 216 and 240 feet high. That is 20-24 stories! We will see later that the length of each side of the wall is over 1500 miles.

The wall has 12 gates – 3 on the east, north, south, and west sides of the wall. Each gate has an angel posted at it. These gates will not be shut during the day. Seeing there will be no night here, they will never be shut! Rev. 21:25 “And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.” How contrary to the story in Genesis 3:24! “So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” Praise God!

Each gate has a name of one of the 12 tribes of Israel on it (these are listed in Rev. 7:5-8). God loves Israel, and He will honor her forever. Israel is God the Father’s wife – Jeremiah 3:14 “Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:”; Isaiah 54:5 “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”; Isaiah 62:1-5 “For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.”; Hosea 2:19-20 “And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD.”; Ezekial 16:8 “Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.”

The wall of the city is like jasper, a precious stone of various colors such as purple, blue, green, brass, and sometimes crystal clear. So God looks like jasper – Rev. 4:3 “And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.” The lighting of the New Jerusalem is like jasper (Rev. 21:11), the wall around the city is like jasper (Rev. 21:18), and the first of the 12 foundations of the city is like jasper (Rev. 21:19).

Now the wall of the city is described in Rev. 21:14-16, 18b-27 – “And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.”, “and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

The city is a cube – Rev. 21:15-16 “And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.” The length, height, and breadth of it are equal – 12,000 furlongs. A furlong is 1/8 of a mile. That would make the city 1500 miles in each direction. That is the distance between Buffalo, NY and Amarillo, TX. The city is so high, that an airplane flying at 35,000 feet would crash 1/20th of the way up the first foundation. The land mass equals 2,250,000 square miles. The total mass of the city is 3,375,000,000 cubic miles. Wow! Try wrapping your brain around that!

The outside walls have 12 foundations. From the bottom to the top, they are made of 12 stones – Rev. 21:19-20:

  • Jasper – purple, blue, green, brass, or clear
  • Sapphire – blue, red, violet, yellow, green, or white
  • Chalcedony – misty gray, clouded with blue, yellow or purple
  • Emerald – green
  • Sardonyx – red color of carnelian, white of the onyx
  • Sardius – flesh color
  • Chrysolite – gold
  • Beryl – pale green
  • Topaz – greenish yellow
  • Chysoprasus – green and gold
  • Jacinth – dark blue verging on black
  • Amethyst – violet and purple

The 12 gates are made of pearl. The street of the city and the city itself are pure gold, like transparent glass (Rev. 21:18, 21). That is a lot of gold!

  • The city has no temple. God and the Lamb are the Temple of it (Rev. 21:22).
  • There will be nations and kingdoms on the new earth. We will serve God there forever. All people there are saved – Rev. 21:24 “And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.” This is the last time the word “saved” appears in the Bible. It refers to those rescued from the destruction. The saved bring their glory and honor (that which is most valued) into the city, (verse 26). The saved are further described as “they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (verse 27).
  • Nothing defiling, disgusting, or deceitful will ever enter the city (verse 27).
  • Although there is no temple, there is still a throne – Rev. 22:1 “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” It is for the Father and the Son. We will not become deities in the future, as cults teach. There is only one throne and it is for God!
  • From the throne flows a pure river of water, clear as crystal. There is also a fountain with the water of life (Rev. 21:6).
  • The Tree of Life is in the New City. It appears as an amazingly large tree that grows out of both sides of the river and the middle of the street. It has 12 different fruits, and it bears fruit every month. The fruit is for the food, and the leaves are for the healing (Greek: therapeia) of the nations – Rev. 22:2 “In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
  • There will be no curse there – Rev. 22:3 “And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:” The word “curse” means “to invoke an evil on someone.” That will never happen again, because God is on His throne, and we will all serve Him.
  • We shall see God’s face – Rev. 22:4 “And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.” Contrast this statement with Exodus 33:20 “And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.” How wonderful to look forward to seeing God face to face!

Jacob and Manoah claimed to have seen God – Genesis 32:30 “And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Judges 13:22 “And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.” God probably appeared to them as an angel or a Christophany (an Old Testament appearing of Jesus Christ). John 1:18 and 1 John 4:12 say that no one has seen the face of God the Father. Jesus was the manifestation of Father on earth, but not in His glory (John 14:9; Isaiah 9:6). It will be common for all the saved to look upon the Father’s face one day!

  • God’s name will be in our foreheads, denoting ownership.
  • There will be no need of the sun or candles there, because the Lord and His brilliance will be the light. There will be no night – Rev. 22:5 “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” The 7 “no’s”: No sea, Rev. 21:1; No sorrow, 21:4; No crying, 21:4; No pain, 21:4; No death, 21:4; No curse, Rev. 22:3; No night, 22:5.
  • God’s servants will reign forever and ever (Rev. 22:5). It will also be a place of reward (22:12). This will be according to our work for Jesus Christ after we become saved by His blood. Other Scriptures to study in regards to rewards: Psalm 62:12; Jeremiah 17:10; Matthew 16:27; 2 Corinthians 5:10; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15; 15:40-42a; Daniel 12:3.
  • Those who are obedient will have access to the Tree of Life, and may enter the gates of the New Jerusalem (Rev. 22:14). Obedience is of utmost importance in our eternal standing. In the New Jerusalem, there will be limitations on those who were disobedient on earth. We will not all be equal. This is implied in Matthew 5:19; “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven”; 19:29-30 “And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.” 1 Corinthians 15:40-42a. Salvation and inheritance are two different things. Salvation cannot be lost, but inheritance can – 2 John 8 “Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.”; Nehemiah 13:14 “Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.”; Colossians 2:18.

There may be limited or no access to the Holy City for some Believers who did not live for Christ in this earth. They may just be on the New Earth looking at the city, just as they were just Believers saved by the Blood of Christ, living with no Testimony – Rev. 22:18-19 “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” This would include those who add to or take away from the Bible. The word “part” in 22:19 means “to get as a section or allotment, a division or share, a lot.” “Out of” means “a separation of part from the whole.”

It seems there will be more written in the Book of Life than just names. Psalm 56:8 implies that our burdens are recorded there as well “Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” See also Malachi 3:16-17 “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.”

When someone tampers with the Word of God on earth, they forfeit rewards and access to the Holy City in the New Heaven. This is the last warning and insight we have into the New Heaven. We may want to take care not to involve ourselves with many of the corrupted versions of the Bible that keep popping up.

In Conclusion:

Heaven is a wonderful place for us to look forward to! This study just scratches the surface of this doctrine. I hope you have prepared to go there some day.

Pure waters of life there are flowing,

And all who will drink may be free.

Rare Jewels of splendor are glowing –

How beautiful Heaven must be.

How beautiful Heaven must be –

Sweet home of the happy and free,

Fair haven of rest for the weary,

How beautiful Heaven must be.

Revelation 21:

1   And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2   And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3   And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4   And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5   And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6   And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7   He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
8   But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
9   And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
10   And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11   Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
12   And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
13   On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
14   And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15   And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
16   And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
17   And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
18   And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
19   And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
20   The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
21   And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
22   And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23   And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24   And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25   And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26   And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
27   And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Revelation 22:

1   And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2   In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3   And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4   And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5   And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
6   And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7   Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8   And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9   Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
10   And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
11   He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12   And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13   I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14   Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15   For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16   I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17   And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
18   For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19   And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
20   He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21   The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

The Doctrine of Heaven – Part 12

John’s Witness of the Third Heaven – Part 8

  • The Marriage of the Lamb – Revelation 19:7-9 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”

https://i1.wp.com/www.holinessofthebride.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Marriage-of-the-Lamb-220x300.jpg

  • Christ is the groom. All of the saved make up His bride. The espousal stage of marriage is over – 2 Corinthians 11:2 “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.” Romans 7:4 “Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”
  • There is no longer a physical separation, as in betrothal marriages in the Middle East. We are now physically together forever, thus is John 14:2-3 fulfilled – “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (Study the parable of the Great Supper in Luke 14:16-24, or the parable of the King’s Son in Matthew 22:1-14 for similarities.)
  • Those in Heaven are not allowed to worship angels or men – Rev. 19:10 “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Compare Rev. 22:8-9 “And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.” They are allowed to worship only God.
  • The Heaven will open as Jesus, on a white horse, and His armies descend to the earth for the great battle – Rev. 19:11-16 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

  • Christ is described as Faithful and True, The Word of God, THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. He judges and makes war with those on earth. His eyes are as a flame of fire. On His head are many crowns. “Crown Him with many crowns…” the songwriter wrote, inspired by this text.
  • Jesus will have a name that no one knows but Himself. There are some secret things in Heaven.
  • His vesture is dipped in blood. Some believe this is His own blood. They have a point. Who else’s blood would be in Heaven – Hebrews 12:23-24 “To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”
  • Jesus will leave Heaven with a sharp sword and an iron rod – Rev. 2:27 “And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.” Rev. 12:5 “And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.” In the fierceness and wrath of God, Jesus will trample the enemies of God under his feet.
  • Will we be in Jesus’ army? It seems to depend on our faithfulness – Matthew 25:21, 23 “His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Luke 19:17-19 “And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.” Or it could depend on our suffering for Christ – 2 Timothy 2: 12 “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:” Notice how those who have suffered are given positions of judgment, and they are allowed to reign with Christ during the millennium on earth – Rev. 20:4-6 “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”

Another angel comes down from Heaven having the key to the Bottomless Pit – Rev. 20:1-3 “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.” He lays hold on Satan, binds him with a great chain, and casts him into the Bottomless Pit. Satan stays there for 1,000 years. This seems to be the last sight that originates in the Third Heaven.

The rest of John’s visiobn in Revelation 20:4-10 takes place on earth until Chapter 20:11-15. These verses describe the Great White Throne Judgment of sinners before God. This event does not seem to take place in either Heaven or on Earth (read carefully 20:11). This seems to be when 21:1 takes place – “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”

The Great White Throne Judgment will be such a sobering, horrific sight, that the earth and Heaven will flee away – Rev. 20:11. This phrase means “to seek safety by flight, to escape safely out of danger, to flee something abhorrent, to vanish.” This will probably be the end of the Third Heaven.

Revelation 20:

1   And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2   And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3   And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
4   And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5   But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6   Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
7   And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8   And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9   And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10   And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11   And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12   And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13   And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14   And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15   And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The Doctrine of Heaven – Part 7

John’s Witness of the Third Heaven – Part 3

  • In the future, saints saved out of the Tribulation period will join those already there in worship – Rev. 7:9-15 “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.”
  • This is very similar to what was described in Chapter 5 of Revelation. This is a great crowd which no man can number. They also cry out with a loud voice. The phrase “loud voice” is found 12 times in the book of Revelation. Eight of these refer to events in Heaven. Heaven is a loud place, loud with worshipful praises to our God and Saviour!. These Tribulation converts are also clothed in white robes. They have palms in their hands. A palm is a token of victory and peace.
  • There is no hunger or thirst, no oppressive heat or sunlight in the Third Heaven –  Rev. 7:16 “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.”
  • Jesus will feed us, give us water, and banish our sorrows – Rev. 7:17 “For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

https://i1.wp.com/sdrministries.org/prophecy/images/trump7.jpg

  • As noisy and loud as Heaven is, there will be one space of eerie silence lasting 30 minutes – Rev. 8:1 “And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.” Millions of angels and millions of people will keep silent for a half an hour as God’s wrath towards those that are on earth rises and 7 angels are given 7 trumpets to blow, announcing the fury of God – Rev. 8:2 “And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.”
  •  There is an altar in the Third Heaven. As the Holy Golden Altar of Incense in the tabernacle of the Old Testament was the closest piece of furniture to the Holy of Holies, so this altar is right in front of God. True prayer is about as close as we can get to God! Compare Exodus 30:6 “And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.” If we wish to spend time with God, we must spend much time in prayer. God says He will meet us there.
  • There is a golden censer in the Third Heaven Rev. 8:3-4 “And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.” With the censer, an angel offers up much incense with the prayers of the saints. It ascends up before God. (See Psalms 141:2; Leviticus 16:12, 13.)
  • The angel will fill the censer with fire from the altar and cast it out into the earth – Rev. 8:5 “And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.”
  • An angel will fly through the midst of Heaven pronouncing the woes on earth – Rev. 8:13 “And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!”
  • A star will fall from Heaven to the earth. This star is an angel – Compare to Rev. 1:20 “The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.” This angel will have the key to the bottomless pit (Chapter 9).
  • Another mighty angel will come down to earth from the Third Heaven having a little book. John is given the book and he must eat it. It is sweet in his mouth and bitter in his stomach, preparing him to prophesy again (Chapter 10). Bitter words are to come against the earth.

Revelation 7:

1   And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2   And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
3   Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
4   And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
5   Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.
6   Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.
7   Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.
8   Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.
9   After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
10   And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
11   And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
12   Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
13   And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14   And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15   Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
16   They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
17   For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Revelation 8:

1   And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
2   And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.
3   And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
4   And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.
5   And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
6   And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
7   The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
8   And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9   And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10   And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11   And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
12   And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13   And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

Revelation 9:

1   And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2   And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3   And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4   And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5   And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
6   And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
7   And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
8   And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
9   And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
10   And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
11   And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
12   One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.
13   And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
14   Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
15   And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
16   And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.
17   And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
18   By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
19   For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.
20   And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
21   Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Revelation 10:

1   And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
2   And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
3   And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.
4   And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
5   And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,
6   And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
7   But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
8   And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.
9   And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
10   And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
11   And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

The Doctrine of Heaven – Part 6

John’s Witness of the Third Heaven – Part 2

  • Vision101There is a seven-sealed scroll in Heaven, waiting to be opened. Not one person in Heaven is worthy to open this book (scroll) or to even look at it. Jesus alone is worthy, and He will open it in the future – Revelation 5:1-7 “And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.”
  • Jesus is described as a Lion who will conquer satan and evil. He is also described as a Lamb slain to satisfy all of the will of God. This Lamb has seven horns. These horns represent the power that He has to execute all of the will of God. The seven eyes represent Jesus’ wisdom to understand all of the will of God. He has been given the Holy Spirit without measure. He is the only one who ever approaches the throne in Heaven and takes the Book.
  • There is universal worship of God and the Lamb, Jesus Christ, in Heaven. Jesus is described as a “Lamb” with a capital “L” on 30 different occasions in the New Testament. Two of them refer to Him while on earth – John 1:29, 36 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world…And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!” The other 28 references refer to Him in Heaven. Thank God when we see Christ in Heaven, we will meet Him as the Lamb. This shows that meekness always wins in the end.
  • The beasts, the elders, all angels, and all people worship God – Revelation 5:8, 11-14 “And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints…And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.”
  • There are harps in Heaven – Rev. 5:8
  • There are golden vials full of odors (perfume) which are the prayers of the saints – Rev. 5:8
  • There is singing in Heaven. The theme is redemption through the blood of Jesus Christ – Rev. 5:9 “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;”
  • The Gospel has worked on earth and there are people out of every kindred, tongue, people, and nation. Heaven is full of people who will rule and reign with Christ; a people place – Rev. 5:10 “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
  • There is a loud voice of worship in Heaven – Rev. 5:11, 12 “And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.” John numbers the angels present as 100 million “ten thousand times ten thousand” and thousands of thousands. Paul used the word “innumerable” to describe the angels he saw – Hebrews 12:22 “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,”
  • All of the creatures of God’s creation are heard worshiping God in Heaven – Rev. 5:13 “And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” Everyone in Heaven and out of Heaven will worship God some day – compare the wording of this verse with Philippians 2:10,11 “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” How and when this will happen, we do not know. It may happen often.
  • The martyrs will be in Heaven – Rev. 6:9-11 “And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.”
  • There are still questions in Heaven – Rev. 6:10 “And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?”
  • There is rest in Heaven – Rev. 6:11 “And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.”

Revelation 5:

1   And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
2   And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
3   And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
4   And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
5   And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
6   And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
7   And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.
8   And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9   And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10   And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
11   And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12   Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
13   And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
14   And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.”

Revelation 6:

1   And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2   And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
3   And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4   And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
5   And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6   And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
7   And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8   And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
9   And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10   And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11   And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
12   And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13   And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14   And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15   And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16   And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17   For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?”

The Great White Throne Judgment

English: Saint Michael parish church in Unterg...

The Great White Throne Judgment

A. Resurrection of the Wicked Dead – Let us look at the facts of this resurrection and judgment:

1. This will take place right after:

a. The Millennium Reign of Christ on earth – “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:1-6)

b. The final overthrow of satan – “And when the thousand years are expired, satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Ma-gog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Revelation 20:7-10)

Vision from Book of Revelation

c. The final war – “and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Ma-gog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.” (Revelation 20:8, 9)

2. There Will be a Great White Throne – “And I saw a great white throne;…” (Revelation 20:11a) The word “great” is a very general word (Greek meaning megas) which, appropriately in this text, means large.

3. God Himself Sits Upon this Throne – “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” (Revelation 20:11, 12) The earth and the heaven fled away from the presence of the great God. See Daniel 2:35; Isaiah 34:5; 2 Peter 3:10-12; Revelation 6:14.

4. This is a Judgment of the “Dead” (Revelation 20:12 above) – This refers to those that are dead in their trespasses and sins, not the saved. See Ephesians 2:1, 2; Romans 5:12; 6:23.

5. Both Small and Great Shall be There

a. Small (Greek – mikros) – Meaning small in size or dignity. Sometimes translated “little” in the English (for example: Matthew 10:42 and Matthew 18:14 – references to children).

b. Great (Greek – megas) – This is the same word as used in point 2 above, describing the White Throne. Great in dignity or stature (sometimes referring to adults).

6. They Will Stand Before God Himself (Revelation 20:12).

7. The Books Will be Opened (Revelation 20:12) The Bible is the “books” mentioned here. “A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set and the books were opened.” (Daniel 7:10) See also John 12:48. The word “Bible” means “library.” It contains 66 books. God is going to judge man by the Bible. Man is responsible to know God’s Word and is accountable for what it says. Having rejected the finished work of Christ, the dead will be judged according to their works. No man’s works are good enough to save his own soul. Read Isaiah 64:6; Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5.

8. Another Book is Opened – the Book of Life (Revelation 20:12)

a. Those written in the Book are God’s people – “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.”  (Daniel 12:1) “Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20) It is the present condition of the saved to have their names in the Book of Life. Also see Philippians 4:3; Hebrews 12:23.

b. Those in the Book have a passport to the New Jerusalem – “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (Revelation 21:27) Having one’s name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life is a passport to enter the New Jerusalem, God’s Holy City.

c. To be written in the Book of Life, one must be saved – Compare Revelation 3:5 “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” to 1 John 5:4, 5 “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” Those who are saved have had their sins cleansed in the Blood of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:5) and the Lord does not impute sin to their account (Romans 4:7, 8).

d. Sinners Will be Blotted Out of the Book of Life – Exodus 32:33 tell us that initially the name of every human being is in the Book of Life – “And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.” But any person who has one sin imputed to them will be blotted out of this Book. Sin is imputed to those who reject Jesus as God’s Son, because they are also rejecting God and sinning against Him.

e. Those blotted out of the Book of Life are the devil’s people – “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” (Revelation 13:8) and “The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.” (Revelation 17:8) I have heard this explained in this way, everyone’s name is penciled into the Book of Life, and when we get saved, they are written over in ink. Those who reject Jesus are not in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

9. The Resurrection of the Dead – “And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.” (Revelation 20:13)

a. The sea gave up the dead. This is a reference to the resurrection of the body.

b. Death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them. This is a reference to the resurrection of the soul. “Death and Hell” are inseparable for the unsaved. See Psalms 55:15; Proverbs 5:5; Revelation 6:8, and Revelation 20:14. These are delivered up to the Great White Throne Judgment.

B. The Second Death

1. Death and Hell are Cast into the Lake of Fire. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” (Revelation 20:14)

a. Death – 1 Corinthians 15:26 tells us that death is the last enemy that shall be destroyed “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.”

b. Hell – Hell has been the “holding center” for the dead lost, before they are cast into the Lake of Fire.

c. This process is called “the second death.” “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” (Revelation 20:14)

i. The first death is physical death

ii. The second death is eternal punishment – “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.” (Revelation 2:11); “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:6); “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8); “These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;” (Jude 1:12)

Lake of Fire

2. All Unbelievers are Cast into the Lake of Fire. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)

The Seven-Year Tribulation on Earth

After we Christians have been “Raptured” or “Caught Up in the Air,” and while we are in Heaven at the Bema Seat Judgment (Jesus will look at what we did for Him after we were saved and give us our crowns that we will gladly lay at His feet) and experiencing the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, those left on earth will be experiencing tribulation such as the world has never seen – “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” (Matthew 24:21) These times are to convince man to turn to Salvation through Jesus, so those who are already saved and have been caught up to Jesus, of course, will not go through this.

I suggest one read the uncorrputed truth from the uncorrupted King James Version Bible. All the others are man-made and have twisted and changed words, as well as deleted many words from their versions. If you want pure, unadulterated truth, go to the KJV Bible.

A. The Tribulation Defined

1. A Time of Jacob’s (Israel’s) Trouble – “Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.” (Jeremiah 30:7)

2. The Great Tribulation – “And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:14 – The 144,000 from the 12 tribes of Israel.) “When thou art in tribulation; and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.” (Deuteronomy 4:30-31)

3. Daniel’s 70th Week – “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” (Daniel 9:24-27) A week is 7 years (See Genesis 29:27)

B. The Events of the Tribulation (In Probable Order)

1. Immediate War – A war will break out between various Eastern Bloc and Middle East countries against Israel. We read about this and see how God will miraculously deliver Israel in Ezekiel 38 and 39. Are we not seeing in the news every day how all those countries surrounding Israel threaten to “wipe them off the face of the earth.”

2. The Anti-Christ’s Rise – The anti-Christ will sign a 7-year covenant of peace with Israel (Daniel 8:25; 1 Thessalonians 5:3). He will break that covenant in the midst of “the week” (after 3 1/2 years) and shall sit in the temple, controlling the world and declaring that he is God. This event is called the “abomination of desolation” in Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14. The anti-Christ is described in further detail in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-10; Daniel 8:23-25.

3. Temple in Jerusalem Rebuilt – This is told in Ezekiel 40-48. Note the existence of the temple at the midway point of the tribulation in 2 Thessalonians 2:4.

4. God’s Two Witnesses Begin to Preach – “And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.” (Revelation 11:3) This 1,260 days is 3 1/2 years.

5. Book with Seven Seals is Opened – Each seal reveals something that will happen on earth. This is told in Revelation 5.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse...

a. First Seal – “And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.” (Revelation 6:2) The anti-Christ begins to rule.

b. Second Seal – “And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.” (Revelation 6:3, 4) Peace is taken from the earth and replaced by a great sword (possibly a reference to the previously mentioned war in Ezekiel 38-39).

c. Third Seal – “And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.” (Revelation 6:5, 6) A world-wide famine.

d. Fourth Seal – “And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.” (Revelation 6:7, 8) One-quarter (1/4th) of those living on earth are killed.

John on Patmos

e. Fifth Seal – “And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the alter the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.” (Revelation 6:9-11) The martyrdom of believers on earth.

f. Sixth Seal – “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” (Revelation 6:12-17) A great earthquake, changes in the sky.

g. God’s Mark and Seal on His Own – “And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: and they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.” (Revelation 14:1-5) Following the opening of the Sixth Seal, God marks his children on their foreheads and seals 144,000 who will be witnesses for Him. These 144,000 are Jews – Revelation 7:1-8 – Twelve thousand from each of the twelve Tribes of Israel.

The Seven Trumpets and the angel with a censer h. Seventh Seal – This part of the sealed book reveals  seven angels, sounding seven trumpets of Judgment. This is all told in Revelation 8:1 – 11:19.

i. First Trumpet – Revelation 8:7 “The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. (1/3 of all trees and grass on earth are burned up)

ii. Second Trumpet – Revelation 8:8, 9 “And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.” (1/3 of the sea becomes blood, 1/3 of all water life dies, 1/3 of all ships are destroyed)

iii. Third Trumpet – Revelation 8:10, 11 “And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.” (1/3 of the earth’s water becomes poisonous)

iv. Fourth Trumpet – Revelation 8:12 “And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.” (1/3 part of daylight and night removed)

v. Fifth Trumpet – Revelation 9:1-12 Hideous satanic demons torment unbelievers on earth for 5 months. John saw “a star fall from heaven unto the earth.” This star refers to an unidentified demonic being, perhaps even Satan. Jesus spoke of a fall of Satan (Luke 10:18), as did Isaiah (Is. 14:12). The “bottomless pit” is the residence of the anti-Christ before he appears on earth (Revelation 9:1; 11:7) and the place where Satan is bound during the millennium (Revelation 20:3). It appears to be a place for the imprisonment of demons (Luke 8:31). The locusts represent demonic forces that are released and allowed to torment and bring judgment upon unrepentant humanity (see also Joel 2:1-12, 25). The king of the locusts is the “angel of the bottomless pit” (Revelation 9:11). Abaddon (Hebrew) and Apollyon (Greek) mean “the destroyer,” one of the names for Satan.

vi. Sixth Trumpet – Revelation 9:13-21 depicts how 1/3 of all men will be killed in a war such as this world has never witnessed. An army of two hundred million is described as killing a third of mankind. This inconceivably large force–more than the entire population of the earth at the time Revelation was written–is beyond human comprehension. Many see this as an actual army, while some identify this language as symbolic of a demonic host. In any case, the outpouring of suffering and death at the sounding of the fifth and sixth trumpets seems terrible; yet its purpose is merciful. It is designed to encourage people to repent before it is too late to do so.

vii. The Two Witnesses from God, who torment unbelievers with their preaching, are slain and left dead in the streets for 3 1/2 days. They resurrect and ascend into Heaven.  – Revelation 11:7-12

viii. The Seventh Trumpet – Revelation 11:15-19 “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou has taken to thee thy great power, and has reigned. And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.”

6. The Beast and False Prophet Rise – The Beast is the one-world political leader. The False Prophet is the one-world religious leader. These will rise to full prominence and control the entire world. (Revelation 13) The Beast rises up out of the sea, which indicates that the anti-Christ may emerge from a situation of political chaos (Isaiah 7:20). John’s description of the Beast is similar to his description of Satan (Revelation 12:3), indicating a close relationship between the two. The Beast derives his power, rule, and authority directly from Satan (Revelation 13:3).

7. The Gospel is Preached to All the World – “And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,” (Revelation 14:6) See also Matthew 24:14. All the way down to the last millisecond, God is showing great mercy to give any and all still another chance to repent and come to Him. He does not wish to cast anyone into Hell. That place has always been meant for satan. It is too bad that so many will listen to satan and join him there.

8. The Seven Vial Judgments on the Earth – “And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.” (Revelation 16:1)

a. First Vial – “And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.” (Revelation 16:2)

b. Second Vial – “And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.” (Revelation 16:3)

c. Third Vial – “And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.” (Revelation 16:4)

d. Fourth Vial – “And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.” (Revelation 16:8, 9)

e. Fifth Vial – “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.” Revelation 16:10, 11)

f. Sixth Vial – “And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.” (Revelation 16:12) See also verses 13-16. This is the preparation for the Battle of Armageddon.

g. Seventh Vial – “And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.” (Revelation 16:17, 18) See also verses 19-21. This will be the greatest earthquake ever, bringing about the destruction of the one-world religious system (Revelation 17) and the one-world political and commercial systems (Revelation 18).
