The Lord Will Fight for You!

This promise is one God has patiently worked all of my life to teach me. Having been molested as a child, it was difficult to overcome the hurt and anger that God ‘let’ it happen. He is still working on me to be still and let Him fight for me in the battles that He is allowing in the first place. It is for His glory, my growth, and to help someone else to know that He, Jehovah, is the LORD. I look at it as win, win, win, when I stop fretting and remember this Scripture:

God had just led Moses and His people out of Egypt, and Pharaoh’s heart was once again hardened against them, to go after them. They were trapped between Pharaoh and his army and the sea, beside Pihahiroth. The people feared for their lives and quickly forgot the oppression they had left, deceiving themselves thinking it would have been better had they stayed in Egypt and continued in slavery and bondage, than to serve the Lord God Almighty.

Exodus 14:14 “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Be still and know that He is God!

Exodus 14: 13-31:

13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:

16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

31 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

“I Will Honor Him”

Psalm 91:14-16 “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” (Part IV of D.L. Moody’s Sermon “The Ninety-First Psalm”)

IV. “I Will Honor Him” “I will… honor him.” God’s honor is something worth seeking. Man’s honor does not amount to much. Suppose Moses had stopped down there in Egypt. He would have been loaded down with Egyptian titles. But they would never have reached us. Suppose he had been Chief Marshal of the whole Egyptian army, “General” Moses, “Commander” Moses; suppose he had reached the throne and become one of those Pharaohs, and his mummy had come down to our day.

What is that compared with the honor God put upon him? “I will… honor him.” Did not God put honor on Moses? How his name shines on the page of history!

The honor of this world does not last; it is transient; it is passing away, and I do not believe any man or woman is fit for God’s service that is looking for worldly preferment, worldly honors and worldly fame. Let us get it under our feet, let us rise above it, and seek the honor that comes down from above.

Doctrine of Death – Part 6

IX. What happened when Old Testament Saints died? There is an interesting statement found on 11 occasions in the Old Testament. It speaks of one dead as being “gathered to his people.” This phrase is never used in the New Testament. Here are a few examples: “Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.” (Genesis 25:8) “And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.” (Genesis 25:17) “And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:” (Deuteronomy 32:50)

That statement has perplexed Bible students for years. Some believe it just means that the dead body becomes the possession of the living relatives to bury where they want. Others believe the statement refers to an afterlife reunion with loved ones.

Some of the newer “per-versions” of the Bible do not tackle the subject at all – they just delete these words without any explanation. Matthew Henry in his commentary explains it this way, “His body was gathered to the congregation of the dead, and his soul to the congregation of the blessed.” Where was this gathering of Old Testament saints? It was to the place referred to by Christ in Luke 16:19-31. As you read it, notice the 6 references to Abraham:

“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”

This word hell comes from “Hades” which means “the place of departed souls.” It appears to be in 2 compartments within eyesight of each other. One for the damned, a place of torment. The other for the blessed, a place of comfort. The Old Testament saints were considered “captives” of that place within the heart of the earth until Jesus came and led them out at His Resurrection. Jesus’ soul went into hell (Hades) when He died: “Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” (Acts 2:27) “He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.” (Acts 2:31) “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40)

This intriguing story of Samuel shows us how he was brought up from the lower parts of the earth by the request of King Saul with the help of the witch of Endor. “Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.” (1 Samuel 28:11-15) Samuel said he was “disquieted” when he was brought up. He appeared to have been in quiet comfort, resting. This would reconcile Christ’s teaching about Hades with Abraham, who was comforted.

X. What happened when Old Testament sinners died? People in the Old Testament days were either converted or unconverted – Psalm 51:13 “Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” The truths that we saw under the last point also apply here. These departed souls also go into Hades (hell), but into the place of torment where the Rich Man was – see Luke 16:19-31 again. The Old Testament saints were resurrected when Jesus rose from the grave. They ascended into Heaven. Those that were sinners remained in the same place. There is no reference to them ever coming out.

Theology – The Doctrine of God-Part 4

IV. The Names of God – Here are some of the major names of God found in the Bible:

A. JehovahMeaning, “The Self-Existent One” “And God [Jehovah] said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:14) God exists by Himself. He does not need His creation to satisfy Himself. This holy name of Jehovah was not uttered by Jews. They would bathe their bodies and change their clothes before they would write this name on Holy Script. The word “Jehovah” is used four times in the King James Bible (“And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.” Exodus 6:3; “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.” Psalm 83:18; “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2; and “Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:” Isaiah 26:4).

B. Adonai – Meaning, “My Lord and my Master.” “Ye call me Master and Lord [Adonai]: and ye say well; for so I am.” John 13:13)

C. Elohim – Meaning, “The strong One” or “the One to be feared.” “In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

D. El-Shaddai – Meaning, “The All-sufficient One.” “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord [El-Shaddai] appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” (Genesis 17:1) This is the One who can satisfy all. Beside God, man needs nothing to fulfill him.

E. El-ElyonMeaning, “the Most High God.” “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God [El-Elyon]: I will sit upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” (Isaiah 14:13-14)

F. Theos – Meaning, “God.” “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God [Theos], which he hath purchased with his own blood.” (Acts 20:28)

G. Kurious – Meaning, “Lord.” “And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God [Kurious].” (John 20:28)

H. Pater – Meaning, “Father.” “And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father [Pater] which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.” (Luke 11:2)

I. Emmanuel – Meaning, “God with us.” “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)

The Doctrine of God’s Angels

Part I

Now that I have shared the truth about satan and demonology, I will move on to the next study in this series – The Doctrine of God’s AngelsMany facts about these angels, such as their creation, their bodies, etc. were covered in the Doctrine of Demons lesson. Seeing the devils started out as righteous angels, the facts are the same. Now, let us discover more information about the righteous angels.

I. Two of God’s Angels are Named

Michael – a prince with God. “One of the chief princes” – Daniel 10:13 “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia,” “Your prince” – Daniel 10:21 “But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince,” “The Great prince” – Daniel 12:1 “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book,” “The Archangel” – Jude 9 “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee,” “Michael and his angels” – Revelation 12:7 “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels.” Note: Michael is the only archangel mentioned in the Bible. The word “archangel” only appears 2 times in the Bible (1 Thessalonians 4:16, Jude 9). If Michael is the only archangel, it will be his voice we hear at the Rapture. Remember – Angels are messengers. The message will be “Come Up Hither.” However, Daniel 10:13 seems to indicate he is just one of the archangels. Archangel means “chief angel” in Greek.

Joseph dreaming and Angel Gabriel (Monaco, Man...B. Gabriel – a man of God, one who stands in the presence of the Lord. First mention of Gabriel – Daniel 8:16 “And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision,” delivers a message to Daniel – Daniel 9:20-23 “And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.”

Delivers a message to Zacharias announcing the birth of a son, John the Baptist – Luke 1:11-20 “And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.”

Delivers a message to a virgin named Mary about the birth of a son, the Lord Jesus Christ – Luke 1:26-38 “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”
